About the BCBSNC Foundation

In 2000, a $1 million grant to ECU Care to expand health care access to eastern North Carolina’s uninsured launched the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) Foundation. In the decade-plus to follow, the separate and independent BCBSNC Foundation has invested more than $80 million into communities across the state, supporting more than 600 grants and special initiatives and reaching into each of North Carolina’s 100 counties.

From expanding our state’s network of free clinics, to addressing the growing childhood obesity epidemic, to empowering North Carolina nonprofits, our mission has remained unchanged: improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians.

To fulfill this mission, we invest in programs and services in response to grant requests, and in support of needs and opportunities identified by the Foundation. Our outcomes-focused grantmaking approach is guided by three primary focus areas, each of which is designed to proactively support organizations, programs and services capable of attaining measurable results and sustained community impact.
